The Big Brother Nigeria show is arguably the most-watched reality TV show in the whole of Africa. Season 5 of the show, tagged the BBNaija Lockdown Season, premiered on 19 July 2020 on Africa Magic and the live feed on DStv channel 198 and GOtv channel 29, hosted by Ex-housemate from season one, Ebuka Obi-Uchendu.
This year’s show was also said to have broken records with over 262,800 hours of streams, approximately 30 years of viewing, and raking in about 900 million votes in total.
All the housemates became stars overnight, even those evicted on the first week, amassing thousands of social media following and loads of gifts from fans. The winner of the season, Laycon, went home with a whopping ₦85 million worth of prizes – ₦30 million ($78,117) cash prize and over ₦55 million ($14,3214) worth of gifts.
MultiChoice, the organizers of the show must have also made a whole lot of money from voting by fans of the show done through the BBNaija website, SMS, and the DStv and GOtv apps, not to mention sponsorship fees from partners and monies accruing from advertising spots.
